Frequently Asked Questions
Last updated: November 2026
Do all windows need a cill (sill)?▾
Yes — every window needs either a projecting cill or an equivalent drainage detail to comply with Building Regulations. CCRM's cill range uses a polyurea finish, chosen for flexibility and weather resistance over the building's lifetime.
What size window cill do I need?▾
Size depends on wall thickness and finish: standard cavity walls typically use 150mm, while rendered or thicker walls often need 225mm or more. Our team can confirm the right size from your wall build-up drawings.
What's the difference between a cill and a sill?▾
No material difference — 'cill' is the term commonly used locally in Ireland and the UK, while 'sill' is more common in the US. Both external cills and matching internal window boards are covered under the same range.
Why does a cill project outward from the wall?▾
So rainwater drips clear of the wall face instead of running down the brick or render, preventing staining and long-term damp penetration.
What's the difference between an internal and external cill?▾
An external cill is angled and weatherproof, shedding water; an internal cill (window board) is flat and decorative, finishing the inside reveal.
Can a cill be replaced without replacing the whole window?▾
Yes, in most cases — though it's best done alongside a full reseal of the window junction for the tightest weatherproofing.
Why choose a polyurea cill over traditional GRP?▾
Polyurea is more flexible and UV-stable than standard GRP, resisting the cracking and brittleness that shorten the service life of older fibreglass products.
Are these cills suitable for commercial specification projects?▾
Yes — CE marked and manufactured to consistent tolerances suitable for both residential and larger commercial projects.
